My Plan for Barrow & Furness
I want to see Barrow and Furness grow and prosper, and to secure its future.
We’re such a unique place. We’re a world-class manufacturing and engineering hub in an area of incredible natural beauty. Our schools and colleges are second to none, and we have a great local hospital at our heart. But yet we’re out on a limb and often only a second thought to politicians in Carlisle, let alone Westminster. I want to give Furness a voice so that we are heard in Westminster, and so that we can prosper.
I want our highly-skilled workforce and supply-chain businesses to feel secure about their futures. And I am passionate about ensuring that if people fall upon hard times, they get the support they need. We need to improve the A590 and A595, sort out our rail network, and improve mobile and broadband coverage across Furness.
Together, we’re moving in the right direction. We’re seeing record levels of investment in our local NHS and schools, we’re getting more Police Officers on the beat, and we’ll soon have a bypass at Dove Ford.
But there’s still a lot of work to do. By working together, we can secure Furness’ future. My priorities are below, but I want to hear your views and know what matters most to you.
1. DELIVER BREXIT. NO IFS, NO BUTS
I want to see the referendum result honoured so that we can get on with delivering on the issues that matter most to you and your family.
2. BACKING TRIDENT
I fully back the Dreadnought programme, securing jobs for local people and keeping our country safe. That work is the backbone of our local economy and I will never do anything to endanger it.
4. REDUCING CRIME AND ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR
Local people want to feel safe and secure. I will deliver our fair share of the recently announced 20,000 extra police officers, to help keep our area safe and tackle anti-social behaviour and rural and urban crime.
3. BYPASS DOVE FORD, UPGRADE THE A590, IMPROVE OUR BROADBAND
Our connectivity is crucial, whether by road, rail or online. If we want Furness to succeed and for people to be able to work, commute and enjoy themselves, then we must work together to fix these issues.
5. HELPING THOSE WHO NEED IT the most
With a clear plan and focus, we’ll tackle areas of poverty, reduce social isolation and make sure people get the help they need if they fall on hard times. I have led charities which have done this before.
6. PROPERLY FUNDING LOCAL SERVICES
So that Furness General Hospital has the resources it needs, and every child has the best possible start in life. We have pledged £33.9 billion for the NHS, seed funding for new hospitals in Barrow and Lancaster, and to level-up school funding.
This might be my plan, but I want to know which issues matter most to you. Please get in touch and let me know.
