Barrow & Furness MP Simon Fell calls for residents’ views on how the Council should spend the £129million allocated to local transport improvements

On Monday 26th February the Government announced a £129million boost to Cumbria’s transport network. This follows £289million of funding being announced for road remediations only the week before.

Cumbria’s MPs, including local Furness MP Simon Fell immediately wrote to the two councils in Cumbria, outlining their priorities for this funding, including delivering the Grizebeck bypass, improvements to the A595 and A590, and designing and implementing improvements at Duddon Bridge.

Mr. Fell described this funding as ‘game changing’ giving the county an opportunity a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver the improvements which it desperately needs.

Since then, Simon Fell MP for Barrow and Furness has announced a survey to ask local residents for their thoughts on where Westmorland and Furness Council should be spending their allocation of this funding with regards to local road and transport improvements.

Commenting, Mr. Fell said:

“This money is essential to changing the roads we see today. One third of all casework that arrives at my office’s door is about council issues involving potholes, uneven roads and traffic problems.

“Whilst I welcome the redirection of HS2 funds to the Council budget, I think it is important that the people of Barrow and Furness have a say on where this budget is spent.

“That’s why I have created this survey to allow the residents of Barrow & Furness to offer their thoughts and ensure that the Council properly addresses local concerns.”
