Gigabit broadband finally comes to Walney.

What’s being announced today?

As both your MP, and the Government’s Rural Connectivity Champion, it has long been a frustration to me that Walney Island, home to over 10,000 people, only has full-speed broadband available at Biggar Village and at one other housing development.

Whether you run a business, work, learn, get your entertainment, browse, or shop online, a fast and reliable internet connection is now a necessity.

I was very keen to hear about your experiences with your broadband on Walney Island so surveyed every resident. I received hundreds of experiences, and over 90% of residents responded that they were unhappy with their current provider.

Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to fill in my survey. I took your experiences and your feedback and reached out to broadband providers directly to find a solution.

I’m pleased to let you know that Voneus Broadband have stepped up to offer gigabit broadband across Walney Island.

Voneus’ gigabit wireless technology uses existing infrastructure to form a wireless broadband network that delivers proven gigabit speeds. The rollout of the network is efficient and quick as it does not rely on digging up roads and blocking streets with road closures.

Residents of Walney Island will finally be able to switch to better, more reliable broadband by the summer.

What’s happened so far?

Thank you to everyone on Walney who participated in my Broadband Survey in November 2023.

The survey had hundreds of responses, with over 90% of people saying that they would upgrade to full fibre if they had the option, and well over 50% of people telling me that their current line isn’t sufficient.

In May 2022 following the broadband outage in parts of Furness at huge inconvenience for residents, service providers, and businesses I wrote to the CEO of Openreach calling on him to expedite works to get us back online, and asking how they would compensate affected customers.
